BrandDNA
A brand, much like a living organism, breathes, moves, evolves and adapts
to its surroundings. Its core genetic structure is composed of elements and
attributes unique to a brand's origins and environment. We call this–brandDNA.
As Molecular Brandologists, we examine, nurture & develop existing brands
while also formulating the foundation for new ones. With a holistic design
approach to brand development, we cultivate viable & sustainable brands—
Molecular Brandology 101
Formulating a cohesive and fortified brand involves understanding and closely
examining its origins. The building blocks for a successful brand begin
with the nurturing and development of a brand from its core essence — what
we call brandDNA. Through our {scientific} approach
to graphic design, we construct well-crafted visual experiences that mold
brands into living organisms, ones that ultimately take full shape in the
marketplace.

WHAT's IN A WEB SITE?
Web design is no longer an industry buzz word. As a Design Consultancy and Web Design & Development studio in Baltimore, we are constantly developing creative solutions current with the times. Web design has evolved over the years and with the "Inception" of the Web 2.0 trend and subsequent web standards and design guidelines, Pixels+Points has evolved into a studio dedicated to creating Web Sites and Digital Brands that stand the test of time and technology. A Web site if not just a marketing tool for a business, its an asset, a strong tool in the digital marketing and advertising arsenal. A Web site is no longer a static brochure, but a rich, content-driven, motion-laden portal which communicates a company's product, service or vision to a wide audience.

latest news 12.10.09
Pixels+Points has just launched the web site for startup mid-atlantic forex investment group, Pinnacle Forex Group. Having previously designed the firm’s new logo and slogan “We’re on Top of It™”, the Pixels+Points team developed a web site that positioned the young firm among its foreign exchange market competitors. A contemporary color palette and subtle typographic treatments of foreign currency symbols as graphic elements, round out PFG’s inaugural web presence. View PFG’s logo and identity work here.
Working with Loop 9 Marketing, Pixels+Points
designed and developed a branding campaign for E-Gen™, Arclin’s
sustainable product suite. Within the timeframe of 4 weeks, we designed
a complete collateral package, booth displays and Web site for the upcoming
GreenBuild 2009 in Phoenix. Centered around the concept of “the ingredients
of green”, Pixels+Points developed a cohesive visual identity that
focused on E-gen’s trademarked “leaf” as the conceptual
entry point, consistent throughout the rest of the materials. At the “root” of
it all, is E-Gen’s product suite. Click here for samples of the Web
site, booth display and print collateral.
Athena Square is the latest project from Baltimore-based developer Metroscape
Development. Pixels+Points completed the print and online branding for
the town homes, located in Baltimore’s Greektown neighborhood. The
Pixels+Points design team developed the logo,
Web site design and print collateral.
Pixels+Points recently completed the logo
design & print collateral for Privé Salon & Spa at Silo
Point. The
salon menus and business cards were developed as matching sets, with the
salon-related collateral in orange and the spa-specific pieces all in blue.
While the salon’s full name is Privé Salon & Spa at Silo
Point, the words “salon” and “spa” were separated
to cohesively brand each of the service offerings to match the salon’s
interior color scheme, (which happens to be a 2-story loft with the salon
on the main level and spa on the mezzanine.)
2008 Archive: Pixels+Points developed advertising design concepts for Radius Travel, a DC-based corporate travel management company with global reach and local expert knowledge. The Baltimore-based design studio created several ad campaigns geared towards specific audiences, for placement in key magazines and travel publications. The three distinct campaigns (below) were driven by Radius’ newly-formed tagline ,”We speak the language of corporate travel.”
Side note: Unfortunately, due to the onset of “mad cow” disease in Europe at
the time concept 1 (top left) went to print, it was subsequently pulled from
distribution and sadly never saw the light of day.
Atot (which is Mayan for house/home)
is a Mexican home furnishings store located in San Diego. Pixels+Points is currently
branding the store’s print and online presence, starting with the logo
design (inspired by “papel picado”). The colors and typography reflect
the warmth and rich textures of traditional Mexican architecture and décor.
Pictured below are variations on the logo design along with the Summer 2009 catalog.
Pixels+Points recently collaborated with the Baltimore PR agency, Imre, to design a logo for the American Institute of Architects (AIA). Pixels+Points designed the new logomark utilizing the original letters from the AIA mark itself, subtly positioned in the word “America.” The result was a powerful and engaging logotype. To view the logo in use and in animated form, check out AIA’s The Shape of America.
Diamond Tavern is Hilton Hotel’s restaurant located at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. Pixels+Points’ continued design and branding work includes exterior banner signage (below), themed appropriately for baseball season. Pixels+Points also designed the restaurant’s logo, print collateral and transit advertising.
Pixels+Points recently assisted Prometric’s Baltimore-based marketing department in branding their proprietary item banking software, Intelitest. The resulting efforts included the logo design and digital multimedia presentation. The Pixels+Points studio has now taken the Intelitest brand online with their Web site, Intelitest.us.
Pixels+Points recently developed a print-based branding campaign for Innovation Technology, a summer engineering program for high school students at Johns Hopkins University’s Whiting School of Engineering. The studio designed a brochure and poster, centered around the student and the theme of “innovation.” Contemporary colors and updated imagery completed the campaign, launched in early 2009.
The design studio of Pixels+Points is currently developing design proposals for Bin 404 wine bottles and packaging. Below is a sneak peak of a logomark and bottle label.
Reactiv is an start-up interactive agency based in New York City. Pixels+Points designed their new logo and brand identity. The “arrow” motif from the logomark is mirrored subtly in the letters “A” and “V” of the typemark, also becoming a branding element throughout the identity package. .

new brand of products by Arclin. Working with Loop 9, we designed and developed
a full collateral suite, booth displays, information graphics and Web site.
All launched within 4 weeks for Green Build 2009 in phoenix.
We are currently working with Arclin on revamping their corporate web site.
Changes include graphics, imagery and updated messaging consistent with their
E-Gen brand.
Pixels+Points is pleased to be working with Jos A. Bank on their web site.
Pixels+Points is currently developing the rebranding of Craig L. Snyder’s Dentistry practice. The studio designed a new logo, which was developed from Craig’s name, (and middle initial). Coined ” the dentist with a smile”, Craig L. Snyder wanted to rebrand himself and the practice, creating a more solid visual presence in Baltimore City and County. The new look reflects a slight sense of “humor”, both in the logotype and accompanying merchandise and collateral. Pictured below are business cards, with fun “smile quotes” on the back side of each staff member’s card, further reflecting the humorous tone. Ultimately, the effect of the new branding should be a positive one, with each patient either arriving or leaving with a smile.

our approach
An identity system is the building block of most successful brands. A strong logomark should be both timeless yet contemporary. A well-designed identity system builds equity in the marketplace and elevates the business, product or service to a new level of recognition and purpose. From the initial concepts to project completion, we create identities that stand out in the crowd and stand the test of time and change.
Consistency is the key to successful brands. While a logomark can be considered the kernel of a brand's growth, its value is established and made credible in the marketplace through the use of effective sales and marketing branches. We help our clients examine their existing logo and strategize on the best ways to effectively apply their brand forward throughout print and interactive media.
Design has the power to decorate a space, inform the public, drive sales and most importantly, inspire change. We believe that "design" is more than a trend or catch phrase. It is more than a color scheme or slogan. Design permeates our culture. We live and breathe it in the decisions we make throughout our daily routines. Whether it be a brand of toothpaste or wall paint, chances are, someone has designed, packaged and strategically positioned that product to entice us to purchase it over others.
But good design is much more than mere decoration. It is, more importantly,
about effective communication. From the smallest pixel of an image, to
the point size of the letterform, we believe that every business, brand
and individual has a message that needs crafting. We help businesses identify
who they are, what they want to say, and use the power of the image and
word to creatively craft their message to the right audience.

orking closely with
Baltimore-based IT global testing leader, Prometric™,
we developed a complete multimedia and print suite to secure a lucrative
global contract with Cisco.
The concept for the entire package revolved around Cisco's tagline, "Welcome
to the human network." Both the CD artwork and the interactive presentation
reflected the global reach of both companies by utilizing a visual "timeline" of
the globe, animating and moving simultaneously through key areas of the
world, from right to left. Starting out in Cisco's San Francisco, the
animation moves through the key 9 points of the presentation, while wrapping
around the globe, and eventually making its way back to California with
the message "Welcome back." The widespread success our work has
led to its translation into several languages and shown at key global offices.
We recently designed a promotional mini-site for
electro-pop band Moenia, in conjuction with the release
of their new album, Solar. The landing page featured a rotating
galaxy and solar system as an interactive navigation tool. A blog and
fan message board are in the works. MoeniaSolar.com
Formerly Thomson Prometric™, Prometric™
recently partnered with Pixels+Points to create a complete branding
initiative for their presentation to Microsoft Corporation.
We designed and developed a collateral package which included
data sheets, a CD-ROM package, proposal cover and pocket folder.
Utilziing the "starburst"
element from the Thomson Prometric logotype as a base, we branded
both the print package and the multimedia presentation which illustrated
the global IT partnership the two companies share. Prometric's
pitch, along with the collateral items and CD-ROM interactive,
created quite the impact, so much so, that Prometric is now the
sole source Microsoft vendor for all of their IT test certification
centers around the globe.Congratulations to the Prometric sales
team.

gym of the popular Federal Hill Fitness and will open in early 2008. Take
a look
Pixels+Points recently
branded the newly reopened Pazza Luna in Locust Point. We created their
new logo, complete identity package, lunch and dinner menus, ongoing
ad campaigns and Web site. www.pazzaluna.us.
in the works
Pixels+Points is currently working
with Compete-At, a Maryland-based start-up with
a product suite that helps athletes, event organizers and National
Governing Bodies register, create and manage sporting events online.
We are developing a new look for their corporate Web site and accompanying
verticals, (i.e. sailing, curling and archery).
With the recent success
of Spring Awakening and Duncan Sheik's accompanying score, we
recently created a design proposal for a potential resissuing and repackaging
of Sheik's last album "White Limousine". The new packaging
would be a traditional jewel case design with a black & "white" slip
cover. Removal of the slip cover reveals the amazing full-color imagery
throughout. An 8-page booklet, inlay tray
graphics and the silkscreened "car wheel" CD face art, round
out the package.
noteworthy
Pixels+Points was recently awarded a Silver
Medal in the 2007 Baltimore Addy Awards for their identity
package. Printed as a one-color package with a blind emboss of the
logomark, the stationery system included a business card, letterhead,
policy envelope, notecard and CD/DVD packaging. Look for more news
and recent work on the way. Congrats to the team.

about type+image
Type+Image.org is
the personal Web site of Baltimore-based graphic designer John Welker. Work
featured on this site features past+present projects, including branding
and identity systems, print collateral, Web sites and logomarks. From the
business plan to the business card, everything we all touch and see is in
some way affected by the world of graphic design. For the past 8 years, John
have developed successful print and interactive campaigns to help regional
and national clients tackle the challenge of elevating their visual image.
John Welker was born in Maryland and raised in the cultural paradoxes of Washington D.C. and Mexico City. Long before launching Pixels+Points and Type+Image, John, a graduate of The Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, began his design career in New York City working for several design studios. Projects included print and branding campaigns for both retail and fashion.
After the time in New York, John returned to Washington D.C. where he worked as the lead designer on a wide range of online interactives for museums and cultural institutions, most notably, The National Air & Space Museum, The National Museum of the American Indian, Princeton University’s new art museum, and The Phillips Collection‘s restrospective on artist Jacob Lawrence.
In 2000, John joined Fusion Pop, a small studio focusing on small businesses and non-profit organizations. There he produced print and online initiatives for regional and local names such as EMI/Virgin Records, GlaskoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals and Gold Coast Advertising in Miami.
In 2002, John became a founding member of Round 2 Communications. Over the four years at Round 2, where he served as Art Director and Designer, John was responsible for multiple facets of design, including logo & identity systems, Web site development and print collateral for clients such as BGE, Global Secure, Community Analytics, the National 4-H and the United Way of Central Maryland.
John currently resides in Roland Park.
